Giant squid to go on display in Kaikoura

A 150kg giant squid is to be displayed at Kaikoura's Marine Centre and Aquarium.

The creature was spotted floating near Shark's Tooth point in South Bay yesterday.

Christchurch's Jack Osikai towed it ashore behind his boat.

It ended up being taken to the aquarium - much to the delight of owner Megan Bosch.

"As soon as we got it, I tipped it out onto some plastic, put some umbrellas over it, and layed it right out so the kids and the people can come along and touch it and smell it, and pull the tentacles and see it and feel it."

Ms Bosch is going to dissect the squid in public today and show those there all the different parts.

She said the discovery was of huge interest to scientists, with one of the tentacles heading to Te Papa.
