UPDATE - A family pet has been given up to authorities after the dog turned on a toddler.
A 22-month-old boy received moderate facial injuries in the attack at his home in Kumeu,northwest of Auckland, late this morning.
Constable Gerrit Westeneng says the German Shepherd has been voluntarily surrendered to
dog control.
He believes the boy was pulling the dog's hair, and was bitten, suffering a deep laceration to his cheek.
Another child raised the alarm.
The child was taken to the Starship Hospital in Auckland.
St John Ambulance describes the infant's injuries as moderate, and says he is in a stable condition.
Police are investigating.
