Gas main rupture closes Auckland road

A gas main has ruptured, closing a road in the Auckland suburb of St Johns.

Felton Mathew Ave, between Farmhouse Lane and Howard Hunter Ave, has been closed.

Contractors are en route but motorists are advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes.

The rupture was reported to the fire service at 12.54pm.

Scott Osmond, of Northern Fire Service, said the rupture was a result of a company boring underground.

A cordon is in place but there is no danger to the public, he said.

"Residents have been asked to stay indoors and police are diverting traffic from the area, just as a precaution," he said.

"We're really just there to support Vector, who is dealing with the leak. Ruptures like this happen quite regularly."

The Fire Service sent one fire truck to the site.
