Funds pour in for injured Dunedin principal

A Dunedin school principal critically injured in a cycling crash has had a Givealittle page set up to support the family.

Brockville School principal Craig Hickford, 43, was struck by an Isuzu four-wheel-drive utility while cycling in Main Rd, Fairfield, on Valentine's Day.

Emergency services tended to him at the scene before he was transferred to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition.

Mr Hickford was out of intensive care and ''making progress'', family friend and and creator of the page Angela Ruske said.

''Craig sustained significant head injuries that left him fighting for his life,'' Mrs Ruske said on the page.

''Despite the odds Craig survived and is now starting the very long and slow rehabilitation process, which will involve re-learning many things, including walking.

''Craig's prognosis is uncertain, but he is one hell of a fighter and has already made significant progress.''

The page had been set up to help the family ''overcome some of the challenges'', she said.

''The Hickford family will face many hurdles throughout this long journey of rehabilitation, including those that challenge them physically, emotionally and financially.''

About $4000 had been raised by 1pm today after Mrs Ruske created the page yesterday.
