Environment Waikato has successfully cleaned up a fuel spill after a petrol tanker overturned this morning.
More than 500 litres of petrol poured out the tanker into a nearby creek after the accident on State Highway 39, near Pirongia, 32km southwest of Hamilton about 7am.
The driver escaped with moderate
injuries from the vehicle which completely blocked the road for several hours. Diversions were put in place.
"Prompt action by emergency services has ensured that all the petrol was contained within 50 metres of the spill," Environment Waikato group manager for resource use Chris McLay said.
"Absorbent pads have been used to contain the spill, and a truck will be used to suck out any petrol remaining in the creek."
"We are confident we have contained the spill, and there is no evidence of any adverse environmental effects or long-term damage."
