Friend watches girl's 'violent' assault

Police are appealing for information about an attack in South Auckland, where an Indian man wearing a Superman t-shirt violently assaulted a 14-year-old girl.

Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander said two 14-year-old girls were walking through Manukau's Totara Park along the waterfall track around 8pm yesterday when they noticed a man was following them.

Mr Alexander said the man then assaulted one of the girls, while the other girl screamed for help.

"After the offender had violently assaulted the fourteen year old girl, he stood up and threatened the females," he said.

Mr Alexander said the two girls ran away and found a couple who were walking their dog, who then called police.

The offender is described as an Indian man, around 180cm tall and of skinny build, in his late 20 or early 30s, with a moustache and short spiky hair.

He was wearing a blue Superman t-shirt, and black and white checkered shorts.

Police have spoken to four witnesses and have examined the scene. They have also taken note of the registrations of all vehicles in the area last night.

"We want members of the community who use the park to be vigilant. It is important that people do not walk alone. Police will be proactively patrolling this area to help ensure safety," Mr Alexander said.
