Former principal who had objectionable material named

A former West Auckland principal who pleaded guilty to possessing objectionable material will be sentenced tomorrow morning.

Ex-head of Rangeview Intermediate David Latimer was due to learn his fate at Auckland District Court this afternoon but Judge Nicola Mathers adjourned the hearing until tomorrow because of "additional documentation" placed before her at the last minute.

The man, who was at the school for six years, resigned from his job in February last year following a Department of Internal Affairs investigation.

He pleaded guilty to the charges in December.

Latimer has had name suppression since being charged but today Judge Mathers said there was no application for its continuance.

Previously Judge Nevin Dawson had continued the suppression order but was sceptical about the reasons for doing so.

"There's no shame on the family at all, it's the defendant who has offended. And the form of the offending, which I would regard as abhorrent, it in no way reflects any shame on the family. If anything there should be public sympathy for the family," he said.

The school has previously confirmed the offending did not involve students from the school.
