Former Herald journalist dies

New Zealand journalist Antony (Tony) Whitlock, one of the founders of the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (Panpa), has died in Melbourne, aged 84.

Whitlock, a fourth-generation newspaperman, was born in Hastings and joined the New Zealand Herald in 1935 at 16.

During World War II he reached the rank of major and served in Greece, Egypt, Libya, Palestine and Italy. He joined the Sydney Morning Herald as a war correspondent and was later the paper's chief of staff and London bureau manager.

In the late 1950s he returned to New Zealand as editor of the Hawkes Bay Herald-Tribune.
