Former councillor's wife killed in crash

The wife of former Christchurch city councillor Mike Stevens was killed in a head-on crash on State Highway 1 near Waikuku last Friday.

Glenis Marie Stevens, 67, died at the scene when her car collided with another vehicle 500m south of the Ashley River.

Mr Stevens yesterday described his wife as "the most wonderful person''.

He met her when she was just 15-years-old at the Waimairi Surf Life Saving Club. The couple had been married for 46 years.

"She was my rock.''

Mr Stevens asked that people donate to North New Brighton School Swimming Pool Club instead of buying the family flowers. Her funeral is tomorrow.

Mr Stevens is a former pupil of the school.

"Our grandchildren, are the fourth generation to attend the school.''

The other driver was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.

Meanwhile, Joseph O'Carroll who died when his motorcycle collided with a van at the Gasson and Byron St intersection in Sydenham last Thursday will also be remembered this week.

A tribute titled Joseph's Corner has been created at his work place Street and Sport Motorcycles.

His colleagues will take to their bikes today for "Joseph's last ride''.
