She was forced off the footpath and into a nearby reserve where she was raped.
An 18-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident and appeared in Gisborne District Court last week.
The teenager was released on bail until to reappear on December 12.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott said items collected and forensically examined from the crime scene assisted their investigation.
The second arrest related to an aggravated robbery at the Bridge Store in Roebuck Road, by the Botanical Gardens.
About 7.45pm on June 10, 2010, a man with his face disguised, and armed with a large knife, entered the store and demanded money from the shop worker.
The shop worker refused to hand over any money and the man left the shop through a back entrance.
Det Snr Sgt Scott said a number of items were stolen from the shop when the intruder left.
"As a result of good scene work by the attending officers on the night, some items were recovered that the police allege forensically link a person with the crime."
A 21-year-old Gisborne man was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. He appeared in Gisborne District Court on November 16.
He was released on bail to reappear on December 12.
The day after the aggravated robbery, police appealed for witnesses who might have seen a vehicle near the dairy at the time of the robbery.
No description of the man was available at the time because his face was covered.
