Flooding closes SH1 south of Timaru

Heavy overnight rain closed part of State Highway 1 to light traffic this morning.

A Timaru police spokesman said the road was closed between Pareora, about 10km south of Timaru, and Makikihi further south.

Transit NZ and Timaru District Council staff were working to get the road re-opened.

The spokesman said heavy trucks were able to drive through the flood waters but cars were being halted. No diversions were immediately available.

It was unclear when the road was likely be re-opened.
