Five-year-old killed in Motueka schoolyard

A 5-year-old has died while playing at Motueka High School.

Police understood the child was playing around some trees that had been cut down.

It appeared cut logs had rolled onto, then crushed the child, a police spokesman said.

Fire, ambulance, police and a rescue helicopter were all called to the scene about 5.45pm.

Emergency services were still at the school tonight.
