Five named in national U18 hockey squads

Five Wairarapa players have been included in the New Zealand under-18 squads for 2012.

Morgan Percy and Katherine van Woerkom have made the girls' line-up, and Joseph Robertson, Tane Workman and Alexander Sumenko-Bucknall, the boys.

Each squad consists of 30 players, with Canterbury (seven) and Auckland (five) players dominating the girls' selection and the boys being led by Waikato and Auckland with four, one more than Wairarapa, Manawatu, Canterbury and North Harbour.

Meanwhile, national Federation Cup holders Wairarapa College, who will defend that trophy on home territory this year, were the shining lights in the first round of the Wellington secondary schools premier one girls' competition. They won all seven of their matches, scoring 29 goals and conceding just three.

Their 22 points gave them an eight-point advantage over second-placed St Matthew's Collegiate and then followed Samuel Marsden 13, Wellington East 12, Sacred Heart and Paraparaumu both 7, Queen Margaret 5 and Chilton St James 2.

The first round of the Wellington secondary schools premier one boys' competition saw Wairarapa College place third and Rathkeale fifth. Wellington College headed the table with 25 points, followed by HIBS 21, Wairarapa 18, Scots 15, Rathkeale 12, Rongotai 4, Paraparaumu and St Pats Town, both 3.

Girls' Results - Wairarapa College: Beat Sacred Heart 3-1, beat Samuel Marsden 7-0, beat Wellington East 4-0, beat Queen Margaret 4-0, beat Chilton St James 3-0, beat Paraparaumu 5-2, beat St Matthew's 3-0.

St Matthew's Collegiate: Drew with Queen Margaret 1-1, beat Sacred Heart 3-1, beat Samuel Marsden 2-0, drew with Wellington East 1-1, beat Paraparaumu 4-0, beat Chilton St James 4-0, lost to Wairarapa College 0-3.

Boys' results - Wairarapa College: Lost to HIBS 1-4, beat Rathkeale 3-0, beat St Pats Town 12-0, beat Paraparaumu 10-0, beat Scots 4-2, beat Rongotai 12-1, lost to Wellington College 2-6.

Rathkeale: Lost to Scots 0-1, lost to Wairarapa College 0-3, lost to Wellington College 0-5, beat Rongotai 7-1, lost to HIBS 2-4, beat Paraparaumu 9-0, beat St Pats Town 8-0.

The draw for the opening series of second round matches tomorrow night is - Girls: St Matthew's v Wellington Girls, Clareville at 6.15pm; Wairarapa College v Queen Margaret, Clareville at 7.30pm.

Boys: Rathkeale v HVHS, Fraser Park at 6.45pm; Wairarapa College v St Pat's Silverstream, Fraser Park at 8pm.
