Fisherman dies after cliff fall

A man has fallen down a cliff and died while on his way to a Northland fishing spot overnight.

The local man, in his late fifties, fell about 25 metres from a track above Piapia Bay, near Kaeo, at 2.30am.

He and a friend were heading to a fishing spot when he lost his footing, police said.

His body has been recovered from the shingle beach below.
