Fires break out near Te Kuiti, Ormondville

Fire crews will return tomorrow to dampen some hot spots following a scrub fire near Te Kuiti tonight.

Emergency services were called about the blaze at Mangaokewa Scenic Reserve just after 6pm, a Fire Service spokesman said.

The fire is about 300 metres from the road, and was burning through a 400sq m section.

A helicopter was called in as the fire was inaccessible from the road. No houses were believed to be at risk.

A separate fire was also burning near Ormondville in Manawatu.

Fire crews had the blaze under control and contained, while a helicopter had also earlier helped in the effort, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.
