Fire-gutted Grey Lynn house on 'rare' section draws strong interest ahead of auction

A character villa gutted by fire is on the market - with suggestions the 1900s classic could be saved.

Fire ripped through the Grey Lynn home in February this year with the back of the house completely destroyed in the blaze.

A fire fighter was injured when he fell through some stairs at the Farrar St house but the family living there escaped injury.

LJ Hooker real estate agent Steven Glucina said the front of the house, which included four bedrooms and a wide hallway, was salvageable.

"There is still a lot that can be saved in my opinion but everything would need to go through council of course," Glucina said.

"Everyone wants to know if the house can be removed but I can't say, that is not my area of expertise."

Glucina said there had been a lot of interest in the 430sqm property which was on the preferred side of the street with views out to the west.

"It's a lovely quiet street but is so close to West Lynn shops and Ponsonby. Land around here is as rare as hen's teeth so it will have a sold sticker on it soon."

"The main thing is everyone got out and no lives were lost which everyone is very thankful for," Glucina said.

The average property value in Grey Lynn is $1,301,150 according to QV e-valuer data. A dilapidated villa, at 2 Leighton St, which is nearby, sold for just over $1m two years ago. It was rebuilt and had a two-level extension added at the back, and sold in late March for $2,875,000.

The Farrar St house goes to auction on Wednesday, August 3.
