Fire destroys Dunedin house overnight

One house has been destroyed and another damaged after two fires in the South Island overnight.

A Dunedin woman escaped injury when her Cutten Street home caught fire about midnight, southern fire communications shift manager Lyn Crosson said.

The house was "well involved" by the time four engines arrived and by the time the blaze was extinguished, it had sustained extensive damage.

"(The woman) doesn't have a house anymore," Ms Crosson said.

Fire safety officers were on the way to the scene this morning to find out the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, two people were rescued from an Invercargill house fire, with one hospitalised, Ms Crosson said.

Fire crews were called to the Tweed Street home about 12.45am.

Both occupants were treated by ambulance officers, with one taken to hospital for minor injuries.

The cause of that fire was not yet known, Ms Crosson said.
