Fire crews rush to University of Auckland after fire breaks out at law building

Crews rushed to the University of Auckland after light fitting caught fire in a law school building at the central city campus.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said crews were notified of a fire in an office about 2.40pm today.

“Upon arrival the fire, on the second floor of a multi-storey building, was well ablaze,” a spokesperson said.

“There are currently four trucks and an aerial truck in attendance, with multiple additional crews on their way to assist.”

In an update, the spokesperson said the fire had been extinguished.

“Crews will remain at the scene this afternoon.”

Police said officers have been requested to assist in traffic management.

A University of Auckland spokesperson told the Herald the fire was not deemed suspicious.

“[It] is believed to have started in a light fitting. Sprinklers have caused water damage to the second floor, which will be unavailable for some time.

“The university has been advised by Fire and Emergency that its evacuation plan and building systems worked well, leading to the safe evacuation of everyone from B810 at the Law School.”
