Fined for carrying meth in handbag

A Masterton woman caught with between 4 and 5 grams of meth in her handbag has admitted the charges.

Kelly Kuini Rimene, 37, pleaded guilty to possession of class A drug methamphetamine when she appeared in the Masterton District Court before Judge Bill Hastings last week.

She was arrested following a police search of a Masterton address on June 11 when they discovered methamphetamine in a handbag Rimene later admitted belonged to her and that the drugs were also hers.

Defence lawyer Louise Elder asked the court to impose a fine, which was opposed by prosecuting sergeant Garry Wilson.

"Considering her previous convictions this would be below what would be expected," Mr Wilson said.

Rimene had two recent convictions for possession of cannabis in 2008 and 2009.

Ms Elder said Rimene had no previous convictions for class A offending and that the amount had been below the threshold for supply.

Judge Hastings convicted Rimene and fined her $750.
