Fine weekend in store for most of NZ

The sun will shine on much of the country this weekend.

Metservice meteorologist Dan Corbett said the showers that greeted Big Day Out revellers in Auckland this morning were moving away and should leave the East Coast and Northland later today.

"Tomorrow in Auckland there will be fine spells and good sunshine," Mr Corbett said.

"It's a nice weekend countrywide. It'll be a little bit cool to start off Saturday morning across the far south of the South Island ... but places like Wellington, Gisborne and Dunedin should be [fine]."

WeatherWatch head analyst Philip Duncan said the front that barrelled up the South Island yesterday was weakening.

"The cold southerly that's hitting Southland and Otago at the moment and is moving up the country with this windy unsettled, cooler weather pattern is going to ease on Saturday. The sun should come out in a lot of places and the wind should ease in a lot of places," he said.

Auckland: Showers clearing this afternoon for a mostly fine weekend with temperatures of 23 degrees tomorrow and 25 degrees on Sunday.

Wellington: Showers tonight will clear tomorrow for a "lovely weekend" with temperatures around 20 degrees

Christchurch: This week's cold front will ease overnight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high of 20 degrees and Sunday will reach 26 degrees with NW winds.

Dunedin: After a "rollercoaster ride" during the week, a high of 13 degrees today should rise to 18 degrees for the rest of the weekend. Saturday will be fine and sunny with showers rolling in on Sunday.
