Fine weather this weekend

Fine settled weather should cover much of the country over the weekend, MetService says.

The top two-thirds of the country will bask in bright days as a ridge of high pressure brings sunshine and light winds, meteorologist Andy Downs said.

"Also the northern part of the South Island is looking pretty good too.

"The only fly in the ointment is a little bit of rain for the south around Fiordland on Saturday, and then continuing a little bit into Sunday morning before it eases off," he said.

Otago and Southland could also get a smattering of rain.

"But overall ... (there will be) good conditions in those areas that have been badly affected (by rain) to allow them to dry out a little bit for at least a couple of days."

Auckland and Northland would reach slightly higher temperatures than was normal for this time of year, Mr Downs said.

However, the clear skies and slightly humid conditions could bring fog or low cloud, he said.
