The South Island is also due to get a smattering of rain in the morning with Otago, Nelson and Marlborough remaining dry.
Like the North Island, the sun comes out in the afternoon and the weather becomes more settled with only the odd shower looming for most parts of the country for the rest of the week.
MetService meteorologist Frances Russell said the weather for the working week was looking "bitsy".
"It becomes a bit more settled as we begin to move into Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
'But there are still showers around. I wouldn't like to say it is going to be dry everywhere because it is not."
