'Fight hard Jake': Support strong for 'inspirational' teen

Jake Bailey, the head boy whose touching end-of-year speech went viral last month, is still undergoing treatment for cancer but is allowed some visitors.

Nic Hill, headmaster of Christchurch Boys' High School, wrote an update on Jake's condition for the school's website.

"Jake's treatment is ongoing and will continue for many more weeks. Infection does remain a risk for Jake and visiting is still restricted," he said.

Jake was diagnosed with Burkitt non-Hodgkin's lymphoma one week before his school's prizegiving and was told that without treatment he could have as little as three weeks to live.

Since his speech went global, messages of support have poured in for the teen and his family.

"One of the more memorable messages of support has been from the Christchurch Armed Offenders Squad," Mr Hill said.

"Having read the messages for Jake it is obvious what an inspiration he has been for so many people and I know that we all hope that he in turn has taken strength from the impact he has made."

Mr Hill said messages of support could be sent to Christchurch Boys' High School reception, as should requests to visit Jake.
