A fire broke out on a ferry carrying several hundred people near Coromandel Peninsula last night, National Radio reported.
However, neither operator Fullers Ferry, the Fire Service nor Coast Guard were able to provide any details last night.
A passenger told National Radio that insulation around the engine had caught fire just before 9pm.
Staff told passengers the engine had to be shut down to extinguish the fire.
No injuries were reported.
