Fears Masterton crash spot will claim lives

A Masterton woman fears someone will be killed after the latest in a series of crashes outside her house.

So many cars have ploughed through Claire Apiata's house she said insurance companies will no longer pay out for the damage.

In the latest crash on Tuesday, two cars collided at the intersection of Colombo Rd and Kuripuni St.

She said she heard a bang and looked out the window and saw the cars, before calling police.

"You just hear a bang like that and you know something's happened on the corner," she said.

Ms Apiata said she was worried someone would be killed on the corner if nothing was done.

She has been living in the same house for about 30 years and has seen many crashes over the years.

"It's about time they did something with this corner."

"The insurance company won't do my fence any more because it's been bowled by too many crashes."

A similar accident occurred in the same place just before Easter.

"Somebody is going to get killed," she said.

Masterton District Council roading services manager Hamish Pringle said he was aware of the crash history at the intersection and intended to install a traffic island in the next financial year to help prevent the accidents.

Constable Dana Johanson said the latest accident involved a blue car heading east on Kuripuni St, which was in collision with a yellow car heading north on Colombo Rd.

The yellow car had spun 360 degrees, while the blue car had been shunted, said Ms Johanson.

The woman driving the yellow car was taken to Wairarapa Hospital. A hospital spokesperson said she was in a stable and satisfactory condition.

A dog in the yellow car at the time was not "in a good way" and the man driving the blue car was uninjured.

Ms Johanson said the crash was very similar to one in the same place about six weeks ago.
