Yesterday, his partner, Katene Morris, told TVNZ's Te Karere that he was heading to pick her up from work at the time.
"Our baby is just 4 months old. He won't see our son grow up, or our daughter," she said.
"I was at work. He came to pick me up at 4.30pm. He was running late, but before that I just felt something strange. I felt something and it wasn't right.
"I knew something had happened and three seconds later, all the [emergency service] sirens went off and I just knew that it was him."
Te Karere reported that Ms Morris' relationship with Mr Morgan started when they were at school in Otaki.
"We were very close. He was my all," she said.
"He was my best friend. We moved away from each other and then a few years ago we found each other again and our love was still strong.
"The love was always there, but we were ready to be together. It was meant to be forever."
Ms Morris urged other drivers not to be stubborn and pull over if they were tired.
"If you've had a bad day, pull over, talk about it. Don't keep going."
On her Facebook page yesterday evening, Ms Morris wrote: "We're going home now babe. One last ride together."
This was followed by a broken-heart symbol.
Below that, dozens of people have offered messages of love and support.
Senior Sergeant Steve Ambler of the Waikato highway patrol said initial indications were "that a Mazda car heading towards Te Awamutu has failed to negotiate a bend and crossed the centre-line, colliding head-on with a Ford Falcon XR6 sedan travelling in the opposite direction".
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.
