Fatal vehicle plunge peels away bridge rail

Emergency-service personnel check the Orams Rd bridge over the Southern Motorway at Manurewa yesterday, after a vehicle smashed through the railing and landed on the motorway's grass verge about 4.30pm, fatally injuring the teenage driver.

St John spokesman Murray Bannister said a passing ambulance, which was waved down just after the crash, took the youth in a critical condition to Middlemore Hospital. But police said Daniel Geros, 18, of South Auckland, died at 9 o'clock last night.

Two passengers suffered moderate injuries. It was the second such incident on the overbridge yesterday. The earlier crash, about 2am, forced the closure of the southbound lanes of the motorway for two hours.
