Fatal crash blocks SH1 in Otago

A person has died following a crash involving a car and truck outside of Hampden, North Otago.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 30km south of Oamaru about 11.30am, police said.

Police have confirmed the driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.

The New Zealand Transport Agency advised motorists that SH1 remains closed between Hampden and Waianakarua.

Police at the roadblock north of the crash are telling drivers the wait could be up to six hours.

Traffic on the north side of the crash is being stopped at the intersection of Findlays Rd and State Highway 1, at Wainakarua.

Police are asking all motorists to put off any travel if possible.

Police have said no further information would be released until police had finished their investigation.
