An injured Taranaki climber has been rescued today from a glacier near Wanaka after his emergency beacon was activated last night.
The injured man, his wife and their son were trapped on Bonar Glacier, on the French Ridge in the Southern Alps, about 10.30pm, a Rescue Coordination Centre spokeswoman said.
"The Southern Lakes Helicopter got there last night with the Alpine Cliff Rescue team from Wanaka, but the weather wouldn't allow them to land or winch."
The team was dropped at a nearby hut and they had to walk for two hours up the ridge through snow to the group.
"They got to the scene and they spent the night with them there," the spokeswoman said.
About 9am the rescue helicopter was able to reach the group during a break in the weather.
The man, who had a chest injury, was taken by rescue helicopter to the Wanaka Medical Centre, before the chopper returned for the others, the spokeswoman said.
