Ms Gasnier said her father was unable to communicate with them and the family were hoping he would recover fully.
Cambridge Liquorland owner Bruce Walworth said his friend's condition had not improved and staff were feeling pretty low.
"Jack was an intricate part of our business. He was the go-to guy, the one that organised things."
Mr Walworth said the driver of the car had spoken to his son Adrian, who also worked in the store.
He said the driver was "pretty upset" and he and his wife had arranged to go and talk to staff.
Mr Walworth said he was pleased one of the two men had handed himself in but hoped police caught the ringleader.
One of the shoplifters was bought into the Cambridge police station last week after a family member recognised him from the description in the media. The man was arrested and will appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, police are appealing for information about Levi James Newport, 20, of Hamilton, who was caught on the store's security camera footage. A Maori, he is 182cm in height, of medium build and should not be approached.
