Seldom in any cricket match does the number of extras go beyond three figures but that was the case for Red Star in their 196-loss to Lansdowne in a Wairarapa Cricket Umpire's Cup match played on the artificial turf at Park Sportsground in Masterton on Saturday.

"Mr Extras" was far and away the top scorer for Lansdowne with 107, 80 of them coming from wides, many of which saw the ball scurry across the boundary line to provide Lansdowne with five runs, one for the wide and four more for the boundary.

Batting first, Lansdowne actually looked in deep strife at 45-5 but some some lusty hitting from the tailenders, notably Stefan Hook-Sporry and Drew MacDonald, aided and abetted by the wayward Red Star bowling and fielding, saw them rack up a healthy 318-9.

Hook-Sporry was unbeaten on 85, made from just 57 balls and including seven fours and five sixes and his last wicket partnership with MacDonald (29 not out) was worth 131 runs. Opening bowlers Peter Sigvertsen and Tane Workman did the most damage for Red Star, Sigvertsen taking 4-48 from his 10 overs and Workman 3-62, also from 10 overs.

Red Star never looked like making a race of it with the bat, being all out for 122.

MacDonald and Hook-Sporry were again in the limelight for Lansdowne, MacDonald claiming 4-37 from 10 overs and Hook-Sporry 2-17 from five overs.

Rathkeale provided the upset of the latest round of the Umpire's Cup with a three-wicket victory over competition leaders Greytown.

The students applied early pressure on the southerners when they had them 12-3 and while a 104-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Robbie Speers (53 from 94 balls including five fours) and Tim Boyer (50 from 41 balls including four fours and two sixes) did give Greytown hope of a big score, their 211 was nothing spectacular.

It was Kelsey Fahey who led the Rathkeale attack, finishing with an impressive 4-26 off eight overs.

At 20-2 and 77-6 Rathkeale's hopes of overhauling the target looked slim, but Fahey (57 from 80 balls including four fours and one six) and Jack Forrester (69 not out from 67 balls including six fours and one six) had other ideas and they got their team home - Fahey losing his wicket just 11 runs short of seeing his team to victory.

Boyer completed an excellent all-round effort for Greytown by taking 3-30 from his 10 overs and a Wairarapa call-up looks on the cards for him.
