Support for next year's Wairarapa Relay for Life is a runaway success, so much so that extra space to accommodate the events of the night has been promised by Masterton District Council.
Cancer Society manager Anna Cardno said registrations have now shot past the projected maximum of 100 teams with 112
teams already signed up, but the good news is the limitation placed on teams has been lifted.
"The response has been phenomenal and we are really excited by the enthusiasm out there for the second Wairarapa relay."
Relay for Life is a colourful campout with each team allocated a tent space to call home for 18 hours overnight on February 28 to March 1.
Mrs Cardno said the original intention was to cap team registrations at 100, mostly due to concerns over space in Queen Elizabeth Park.
Masterton District Council has now assured the event its full support and will work with organisers to ensure all space needed would be made available.
Mrs Cardno said with the commitment from council she was "thrilled to say we are not imposing any team limit for now".
That would have to be reconsidered if registrations kept pouring in at the same rate, as there is still three months before the Relay for Life night is held.
Money raised from the relay goes to cancer support services in Wairarapa.
The first relay raised almost $200,000 and organisers are hopeful that figure can be beaten next year.
