A Golden Bay bluff carved up to supply 24,000 tonnes of sand for Wellington's Oriental Bay beach project remains unplanted and is starting to erode, neighbours say.
Property-owners at Wainui are upset at the state of a headland from which sand was removed for the $7.5 million Oriental Bay beach replenishment.
Replanting
the quarried area was a condition of the resource consent granted to contractor Solly's Freight, which quarried the sand.
Wainui resident Beryl Whitehead said she would have preferred to see the bluff replanted by now and the bluff was eroding, with wash-outs across its face.
Solly's Freight owner Merv Solly declined to comment today , but was earlier reported saying that he had planned to start replanting in autumn and was waiting for a dry spell.
He believed work on the bluff would improve it in the long-term.
Tasman District Council environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King said he was seeking information from council staff before commenting on the matter.
Wellington resident Janet Watchman, who has a holiday home at Wainui, said she was shocked at the state of the bluff on a recent visit to Wainui Bay.
The bluff was a "visual atrocity" in a beautiful area, she said.
