English and Sowry to lead National Party

National MP Bill English has succeeded Jenny Shipley as leader of the party, with Roger Sowry elected his deputy.

Mr English told a press conference following the National caucus that he was elected leader, without contest.

There was a contest for the deputy leader position which was won by list MP Mr Sowry, he said.
