Since when did Destiny Church infiltrate New Zealand Cricket? The rumour mill went into overdrive when New Zealand Cricket announced a QC would be investigating an off-the-field incident involving Black Caps fast bowler Daryl Tuffey.
For a couple of weeks, the stories of what was supposed to have gone on were a measure of people's sick fantasies and prurience.
In fact, it turned out to be a relatively mild Clintonesque affair and Tuffey was censured and fined $1000. His crime, it appears, was that he allowed the affair to become public when he initially did nothing to prevent two English oiks from filming him and then showing the images around Christchurch pubs and bars.
Surely New Zealand Cricket could have handled this better. A terse, two-paragraph statement acknowledging they were aware of images circulating and that they had disciplined the player involved would have been fairer and kinder than allowing this incident to take on a life of its own.
Tuffey's been punished far more for an act between consenting adults than the All Black who admitted to a crime.
Perhaps New Zealand Cricket would like to adopt some of Indonesia's new laws in their player contracts. Article 476 states Indonesians must not engage in any public locking of lips, display of private parts or erotic dancing. Looks like that applies to New Zealand cricketers as well.
