Emergency services rush to serious crash that has closed State Highway 1 in Canterbury

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash that has closed a major highway in Canterbury.

It is understood there have been serious injuries in the two-vehicle crash, which occurred near Stonyhurst Rd – about 35km north of the Waipara township.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they arrived at the scene shortly after 7.30pm and were not yet in a position to provide comment.

Initial indications suggested the crash involved two vehicles.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said SH1 had been closed and emergency services were en route to the scene.

“Avoid the area and consider using an alternative route if possible.”

A police spokesperson confirmed they were called to the scene about 7.15pm.

“The road is closed while emergency services staff work at the scene. Motorists are asked to please avoid the area, if possible,” police said.

The Herald has approached Hato Hone St John for comment.
