Elderly woman killed in house fire

An elderly woman died in a house fire near Whangarei this morning.

The 79-year-old woman was found in a Millington Road house at about 7am by a family member who had gone to check on her.

Police said the house was moderately damaged and it was believed the the woman had died of smoke inhalation.

They were not treating the fire as suspicious.
