Elderly woman killed in car crash

An elderly woman is dead after a crash left her car pinned under a logging truck near Waerenga-a-Hika, just north of Gisborne, this afternoon.

The crash was on a sweeping bend about 2pm, at the intersection of Matawai Road and College Road.

Gisborne police said the unladen logging truck came to rest on the woman's saloon car, and the highway was closed while a crane lifted the truck off the car.

The woman, the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene.

The logging truck driver suffered minor head injuries and was taken to Gisborne Hospital.

Enquiries were underway to identify the woman who was described as Maori and aged in her late 60s or early 70s.
