Elderly man dies in Christchurch house fire

An elderly man is dead after a house fire in Christchurch early this morning.

Police said the 83-year-old man was the sole occupant of the Sawyers Road house, which firefighters were called to just before 6am.

He was rescued from the house but died at the scene.

The fire was not suspicious and the man's death had been referred to the coroner, police said.
