Elderly couple assaulted, robbed

An elderly couple who own a dairy in Waitara were assaulted by three men during an aggravated robbery last night.

Police said the men, one of whom was carrying a knife, entered the Raleigh St dairy about 8.15pm on Friday night.

The couple were alone in the dairy at the time.

They were allegedly assaulted, knocked to the ground and subjected to unprovoked violence, police said.

Both were taken to hospital by ambulance and have been referred to victim support.

The couple was "extremely traumatised" by the ordeal.

Police are still trying to establish what, if anything, was stolen.

A scene examination is underway and police are appealing for anyone who has information about the incident or who was in the area at the time to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
