Eight arrested in brawl at 5th birthday party

A fifth birthday party finished with a gang brawl and eight arrests in Hastings last night.

Two police officers were allegedly assaulted after they were called to the brawl between family members and other guests at a Kiwi Place address at about 10.30pm. One of the officers required medical treatment after he was bitten on the arm.

"A fight erupted when a guest associated with the Black Power gang attended the party where people associated with the Mongrel Mob gang were also in attendance," Senior Sergeant Luke Shadbolt said.

About 20 adults were attending the party and most were drunk, Mr Shadbolt said.

"It is a shame when gang rivalry and intoxication on the part of adults ruins a child's birthday celebration."

Three women and five men have been charged with disorderly behaviour and other related assault charges.
