Local Focus: Tauranga Girls' College Principal looks to the future

Four schools in Tauranga have new leaders this year.

Principals can make all the difference to the atmosphere among staff and students, and the school's success as a result. So what difference will these new heads make?

In this series, Local Focus video journalist Jaden McLeod meets the new principals and asks what passions drive them to bring the best out of their young people.

Tauranga Girls' College principal Tara Kanji succeeded Pauline Cowens in 2018. She previously served as a senior leader at Sacred Heart Girls' College in Hamilton.

"I want Tauranga Girls' to be the school of choice for young women in this region, but what does that look like? We need to have a deliberate curriculum that is aimed at bringing about the very best in young women," Kanji said.

Kanji is looking to consult with the wider Tauranga community on their ideas for what can catapult the local girls' school to the next level in terms of engagement and forward-thinking.

"I'm interested in the entire well-being of our young women. Our NCEA results are excellent, but I don't simply want to be measured on academic outcomes alone.

"I want to engage with our girls, to ensure they are given the best opportunities, were cared for throughout their time here, and were given the best measures to get the most out of their learning."
