Easter trading rules likely to be beefed up

Penalties for breaking Easter trading rules are likely to be beefed up if the current law is retained, Parliament was told yesterday by Cabinet Minister Trevor Mallard.

The Government recently sought opinions on a discussion document on the future of Easter trading laws, following the defeat of a bill that would have allowed local councils to decide whether shops in their areas should be able to open on Easter Sunday.
