It was at a depth of 21km and recorded 15km west of Christchurch.
GeoNet reported that shaking may have been felt in Akaroa, Amberley, Arthur's Pass, Ashburton, Cheviot, Christchurch, Culverden, Geraldine, Methven, Oxford and surrounding areas.
