A Dannevirke man said he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw a car plough into a house on High St in the early hours of Saturday.
Neighbour Noel Cockburn lives across the road from the damaged house and told the Dannevirke News the residents were lucky their bedroom wasn'tat the front of the property.
"The house was a hell of a mess," he said.
"The car came off High St, went straight through their fence and hedge and then hit the house ..."
Mr Cockburn said the house is owned by an"older couple", who had not long purchased it.

"When the emergency services and the police arrived, the Fire Brigade pulled some of the boards down because they were just hanging there."
A police spokesperson said they were notified a car had hit a fence about 12.30am on Saturday.
"There were two people in the vehicle, a male and a female, and St John personnel attended to the male at the scene. However, there were no reports of injury."
