Anyone who drank and then carried an offensive weapon was a "brainless idiot".
"We are always speaking to people with weapons... alcohol and weapons do not go together."
People always claim they carried the weapon for self-protection, "but it is no excuse and we will arrest anybody with a weapon in a public place".
Police had talked to people at the scene, and anyone else who may have witnessed the altercation was urged to contact Dunedin Police, he said.
There was no CCTV footage of the incident.
Monkey Bar director Benjamin Hanssen said the incident was a "very unusual event", and fortunately was not serious for the Allied Security doorman.
"It was a relatively minor injury, and he was very lucky in that respect."
