Dunedin man Ross Mobbs remembered as fun-loving and kind after fatal Thailand balcony fall

Ross Mobbs was found dead by hotel staff at the Chillax Resort in Thailand.

Grieving colleagues of a Dunedin man who fell four storeys to his death in Thailand have described him as a fun-loving man with a kind heart.

The body of Dunedin man Ross Anthony Mobbs, 30, was found by hotel workers on the terrace of the Chillax Resort about 3.30am yesterday (NZT).

He man had been drinking with three friends in a hotel room, and tried to return to his own by climbing over a balcony, instead of using the door.

Thailand was the last stop for the group, who had been on a trip throughout Europe and Asia.

Mobbs was employed as a chef at Salmond College and Knox College - two University of Otago halls of residence - since 2009.

In a statement, Head of Salmond College, Murray Jacquays said Mobbs was a friend - as well as a colleague - to all.

"Since news came through yesterday that our much-loved colleague Ross Mobbs died in a tragic accident in Thailand we have been in shock," said Jacquays.

"He will be remembered as a good-natured friend and colleague who possessed a ready wit, an adventurous nature and a love for travel."

Jacquays said grief-stricken staff members from both halls of residence will have a chance to remember their colleague at a private memorial service at Knox College this afternoon.

"We will light a candle in memory of him, and provide space for folk to offer their own tributes - spoken and unspoken."

He was due back to work next week after his five week holiday.

The New Zealand Embassy in Thailand is offering assistance to Mobbs' family, who have requested privacy at this time.

The Chillax Resort is a five-store building in Bangkok's Phra Nakon district, near the popular backpacker centre Khao San Rd.

"There was nothing we could do," deputy investigator Pol Capt Utai Wangtan told Thai media. "He was already dead."

Wangtan said the incident had been reported about 11.50pm on Monday (early Tuesday, NZT).

Police are now trying to reconstruct the events based on Mobbs' friend's testimonies.

A thorough medical examination has been scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
