Dunedin man charged after allegedly threatening police with knife, biting officer

A 30-year-old man has been charged by police after allegedly threatening officers with a knife and biting one of them in Dunedin.

On Friday, police were called to a report of a person interfering with vehicles.

They spotted the suspect on King Edward St and informed him he was under arrest for unlawful interference.

“But when they approached him, he turned around and brandished a knife,” Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.

Bond said the man dropped the knife and was restrained and handcuffed.

“While officers were searching the suspect, he became physically resistant.

“One officer was bitten under the armpit and was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The man has been charged with several offences, including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, possessing an offensive weapon, resisting police and injuring with intent to injure or reckless disregard.

He has been remanded in custody and is set to reappear in the Dunedin District Court on December 24.
