Dry spell to continue for rest of month

The current dry spell is expected to last for the rest of the month, forecasters said today.

A low from the sub-tropics is expected to cover much of the country this weekend but will be pushed back by a high keeping rain at bay, particularly in central and eastern areas, said WeatherWatch.co.nz head weather analyst Philip Duncan.

"We have a lot of coastal cloud in the forecast for the next 10 days and a few days with low chances of rain or showers - no big storms or rainmakers despite them trying to get going offshore," he said.

The South Pacific cyclone season is underway, but the first tropical storm expected to form this week is unlikely to impact New Zealand, said Mr Duncan.
