The drought means extra precautions are in place at this year's Classic Fighters' Air Show in Marlborough.
Around 30,000 people are expected at the Omaka Aerodrome over the weekend for the biannual aviation show, which features planes from the early 1900s to the present day.
Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman saysthe aerodrome is very dry so the risk of fire is being watched closely.
"Pyrotechnics and things going off, I noticed they've burnt a strip of grass so this can still take place. We'll have water tankers and the fire brigade on standby."
Alistair Sowman says they are also suggesting it is a non-smoking event so no cigarettes are stubbed out on the grass.
